Series: Romance Elements #1
Author: Brittainy C. Cherry
Release Date: September 25, 2015
I was warned about Tristan Cole.
“Stay away from him,” people said.
It’s easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster.
But I couldn’t do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him because it also lived inside of me.
We were both empty.
We were both looking for something else. Something more.
We both wanted to put together the shattered pieces of our yesterdays.
Then perhaps we could finally remember how to breathe.
WOW! I am in awe and completely speechless from the way this book left me feeling. As I am sitting here still recovering from all the emotions swirling around, in my head and my heart, I need it to be said – Brittainy C. Cherry this book is a masterpiece. Your words, these characters, their story…. No words will adequately describe the way The Air he Breathes moved me. Tristan and Elizabeth will forever be in my heart, my mind and my soul.
“Forever was much shorter than anyone would ever like to believe.”
Heartbreaking beautiful, The Air he Breathes is a magnificent story that explores the pain, heaviness and life altering impact that loss and grief can have on a person.
Tristan and Elizabeth have both suffered deep and great loss in their lives. It’s been a year since Tristan lost his wife and ten year old son and the same amount of time since Elizabeth’s husband passed away. Losing their loved ones leaves scars so deep and holes so big, happiness seems unattainable. The future seems bleak and the emptiness threatens to consume them from the inside out. The memories influence the struggle to move on. Both so palpable and relentless.
“Sometimes the hardest part of existing without your loved ones was remembering how to breathe.”
A moment of error brings these two people together. Brash and brazen Tristan is like dead man walking and Elizabeth, returning to her home town, is trying… Holding on by a thread, keeping it together for her young daughter. As nothing but anger transpires from their interaction, both are sure they will never have to see each other again. Until Elizabeth realizes she has a new neighbour.
Being neighbours, their interactions begin to increase and soon enough they are sharing in one an others grief. Tristan and Elizabeth are connecting in ways they both thought were impossible. Using each other to hold on to the past and keep the memories in tact, their relationship becomes a coping mechanism. Their truths bared and their hearts bleeding out into the open.
“She undressed me and made love to her past. I slid into her and made love to my ghosts. It wasn’t right, yet somehow it made sense. Her soul was scarred, and mine was burned.”
Time progresses and feelings are changing. Smiles are exchanged, lingering kisses and voluntary co existing becomes the norm. Without even trying Tristan and Elizabeth are becoming something more, something better, something real.
“Every second. Every minute. Every hour. Every day.”
As they admit their growing feelings Tristan and Elizabeth have used their commonalities to rise from the ashes; to support, love and grow. But when things seem to be finally progressing, secrets are revealed that will tear them apart. Leaving readers wondering if their grief will eventually be what tears them apart.
“I love you Lizzie.” “I love you too.”
‘Then why does it feel like we’re saying goodbye?”
The Air he Breathes is a heavy read, Cherry’s writing will leave you delicate and raw. As she explores the hard truths, her writing describes the pain and suffering with such intensity and greatness, it is impossible not to be immersed and affected by the words written on the page. Tristan and Elizabeth are so honest; the authenticity of their relationship is hauntingly and heartbreakingly beautiful. The depth of Cherry’s characters is what stirs empathy in the readers and will no doubt have many eyes filling with tears. Using the secondary characters perfectly. Brittainy C. Cherry threads the perfect amount of sarcasm, humour and banter through the story, giving readers respite from the kaleidoscope of emotions on display.
The Air he Breathes is an exquisite, soul crushing but simultaneously uplifting story that shows off the trials and tribulations of real life, through words that will flow through your veins and linger in your mind, in the best possible way.
